Breathing Through Wires is an ongoing performance project exploring the relationship between breath, voice, amplification and listening. Beginning in the early 2000s as performances for voice and laptop, the work gradually shifted away from software-based systems towards simple, inexpensive electronics, eventually settling on the combination of a head-worn microphone and a small hand-held speaker. Rather than treating technology as a means of extending the voice, the work explores how voice, body and electronics continually reshape one another in performance.
Performed in both stereo and multichannel formats, including the BEASTdome multichannel system at the University of Birmingham, the project moves between fragile vocal textures, amplified breath, feedback and moments of humour. The performances are improvised, allowing each space and audience to shape how the work unfolds. Across its different iterations, Breathing Through Wires reflects an ongoing interest in listening as a way of negotiating the relationship between body, technology and place.
